MATISSE Henri (1869-1954)
Three signed autograph letters and an autograph transcription of Louise Labé's eighteenth sonnet, with an elaborate grossed-up capital B and a drawing of a mouth. Nice, Issy, 1926-1929, 5 pages of various sizes in ink on paper. Also a postcard signed "H. Matisse" with typed message, and a postcard photograph of Matisse painting. - Matisse confirms having received a package of proofs and mentions that he will send it by courier to Pierre Matisse, who will forward his comments to the anonymous addressee of the letter. Matisse gives precise details of the images, thanks the addressee for sending him the proofs, and says that he hopes that the full set of proofs will follow (this is clearly a project he does not control) (Sept. 7, 2008). 1929); - To his doctor, Abel Desjardins, he indicates that his wife is going to go to the spa of Dax for a rheumatism problem (May 20, 1926); - A poignant letter from Matisse, most probably to his friend and colleague Henri Lebasque, written the week following the death of his father; - Matisse copied and illustrated with a capital "B" and a drawing of a mouth one of Louise Labé's most beautiful sonnets (circa 1520-1566), La Belle Cordière, also one of the most passionate, in a manner very similar to that used to treat verses from Poems by Charles, Duke of Orleans (published in 1950). This leaflet seems to date from about the same period. Nice set. PROVENANCE Collection of Paige Rense Noland
