MONET Claude (1840-1926)
Set of three signed autograph letters, a handwritten list and a signed subscription form, addressed to the painter Henri-Charles GUÉRARD. Giverny, by Vernon (Eure), October 17, 1889 to February 13, 1890, 7 pages of various sizes in ink. (Some brown spots on the paper). Set relating to Claude Monet's campaign to buy Édouard Manet's painting, Olympia, for the French National Museum. This correspondence illustrates Monet's efforts to organize a subscription to acquire the famous painting. "I am handling a subscription that we are making among friends and admirers of Manet to buy his Olympia and offer it to the Louvre. It is the most beautiful tribute we can pay to the memory of our friend and it is at the same time a discreet way to help Mrs. Manet since she owns the Olympia. ». Monet attached a list of 34 subscribers and the amount they donated: Boldini, Caillebotte, Durand-Ruel, Geffroy, Galliard, Huysmans, Mirbeau, Monet and Sargent. As of 17 October, Monet's documents show that he had raised 15,025 francs. Manet's Olympia was first exhibited after several years at the Universal Exhibition in the spring of 1889. Between July 1889 and February 1890, Monet worked tirelessly with artists, dealers, collectors and writers to raise the sum of 20,000 francs. On February 7th he sent a letter to the Ministry of Education and Arts announcing that he was donating the painting to the Museum. Since the law forbade access to the Louvre of works of art during the ten years following the death of their creator (Manet died in 1883), Olympia was first exhibited at the Musée du Luxembourg, then at the Musée de l'Art Contemporain in Paris. By order of George Clémenceau, Olympia finally entered the Louvre in 1907.
