MORRIS, BEVERE MAURICE DE, DIT (1923-2001)
Signed autograph letter addressed to Guy HUYGENS Brussels, 7 January 1963 2 pages in-4 in ink on Spirou newspaper's letterhead. (Some freckles, small marginal tears). Rare letter from the draftsman of Lucky Luke to the Belgian painter Guy Huygens (born in 1924) about his exhibition "The Conquest of the West" at the gallery La Rose de Saron in Brussels. The previous year, the two artists had participated in the shooting of the film The Conquest of the West, directed by Jean Delire and Maurice Beerblock. "...] I received your letter of last December and I have thought carefully about your advertising idea. I do not want to influence you in this matter that concerns you, but since you are asking my opinion, I will confess that I am not very keen on this idea and here is why: -Offering a painting for free is never a recommendation for a painter; it demeans his work in the eyes of the public. -Rewarding the 100th Spiritist visitor would make your exhibition a kids' event, which is not the purpose of an exhibition of paintings such as yours. Here again, adults might not be interested, believing that your work is not intended for them. But adults buy paintings, not kids. ...] On the other hand, an idea that I find excellent is the one that consists (as you say) in creating a Far-western atmosphere in the room with an exhibition of some books, objects, etc. There, bravo! (provided you announce it intensively and well in advance). [...] One of my colleagues at Spirou, Monsieur ROBA, draftsman of the series "Boule et Bill" and "La Ribambelle" knew you at the academy (as well as his wife). He recognized you on TV. He asked me to wave when I would see you, so that he could say hello to you too. He's a very nice guy. [...] ». In 1963, Morris works and publishes in the newspaper Spirou, La Ville fantôme, 39th story of the Lucky Luke series. It is with his famous cowboy that the Spirou newspaper will meet a huge success among comic book lovers.
