TOULOUSE-LAUTREC Henri de (1864-1901)
Autograph letter signed [S.l., 1892 ?], 2 pages in-4 in ink on "Lithographic Prints" letterhead. (Numerous marginal restorations, stains and traces of folding). Signed autograph letter, most probably to the man of letters A. Siegel, about the edition of the engraving The Hanged Man. Executed at the request of the magazine La Dépêche de Toulouse, in 1892 to announce Siegel's soap opera Les Drames de Toulouse, it depicts an episode of the Callas affair. Toulouse-Lautrec sent a copy to its addressee: "I shot at thirty, plus three authors, so one for you, the other for Ancourt and the other for me". Edward Ancourt was a printer famous for his posters in collaboration with many artists of his time such as Bonnard, Steinlen or Vuillard. Toulouse-Lautrec's activity as a poster artist is an important part of his graphic work, and he designed and had printed more than thirty copies of Le Pendu: "This edition is not unflattering for my vanity to be a poster artist [...]".
