APOLLINAIRE Guillaume (1880-1918)
La Vie Anecdotique, autograph manuscript signed [Circa 15 August 1918]. 12 leaves mounted in a large volume in-8 in brown ink on paper. Soft binding signed LOUTREL, full ebony chagrin with gilt title on the first cover, smooth spine, amaranth deerskin lining and endpapers, black half-banded half chagrin folder, slipcase. Complete manuscript of one of the last chronicles of La Vie anecdotique, this one published on August 16, 1918. La Vie anecdotique, a column of the Revue de la quinzaine du Mercure de France, was created for and hosted by Apollinaire from April 1911, who ran it until his death. Apollinaire "invented a formula: the anecdote [...] on a thousand strange, touching subjects, seized at random by chance from unexpected encounters, chatter, walks, the anecdote reveals its immense poetic charge" (Pléiade. Complete prose works, III, 1163). "[...] What will be the hymn of the League of Nations when it exists, if it ever does exist, although it seems today quite possible that it will exist one day. It seems that it already has its flag. It could also take Béranger's song "La Sainte Alliance des Peuples" as its anthem: "I saw peace descend on the earth taking gold, flowers and ears of corn, the air was coloured and from the god of war it choked the sleeping wraths [...]".
