GAUGUIN Paul (1848-1903)
Signed autograph letter addressed to Émile SCHUFFENECKER Pont-Aven, 1888. 3 pp. in-12 in ink on paper, envelope preserved, postmarked. Letter from Gauguin to his friend Émile Schuffenecker. Gauguin has just received his letter; he is happy to learn that he and his family are doing well. After dedicating the first page of his letter to Schuffenecker's occupations, he gives him some news: "The climate of Pont Aven is not quite what I need but what do you want we don't choose. In addition, there is such a mess at home that it takes time to get over it. For the last few days I have been getting a little better; the main problem is that I am less courageous at work. I see so black in the future, the struggle so compromised by the young gang! ...] The money issue is so important. From next month I will be obliged to ask Marie Jeanne for credit and at present I have 18 f in my pocket for petty expenses" and asks her if there is any hope that Madame Poujin will take "the painting of the negresses" from her.
