GAUGUIN Paul (1848-1903)
Signed autograph letter addressed to Daniel de MONFREID. [Tahiti], August 1897. 2 pages in-4 in ink on ruled paper (folds). Signed autograph letter addressed to the painter Daniel de Monfreid, friend and confidant of Paul Gauguin. "He also talks to me about the necessity for me to return to France. And with what - and - why. If I had to come back I would not have left this time unless I was crazy. [...] I no longer have a canteen and no more credit even at the Chinese for the bread. If I could walk I would go for days in the mountains to get something to eat but nothing. I was wrong last year not to die, it would have been better, and now it would be silly [...] Ah! If I were in France, I say I could find money in a short time, it's only a question of price, the Van Gogh, the Cezanne and some paintings of me would do the trick [...]".
