GAUGUIN Paul (1848-1903)
Signed autograph letter addressed to "cher monsieur" [Ambroise VOLLARD] [Tahiti], April 1901. 1 page in-4 in blue ink on burnished paper, under frame (folds). Signed autograph letter probably addressed to Ambroise Vollard in which he mentions his departure for the Marquesas. "Tahiti is currently undergoing a terrible influenza epidemic which is killing many old people and inconveniencing others: so my work is not progressing fast. On the other hand, the continual threats of bubonic plague reported in San Francisco are putting our ships in quarantine, which increases the price of goods. If this continues, life will be so expensive that I will be forced to leave for the Marquesas, which in the end would not be a bad thing because it will give me something completely new for my paintings". The mention of two shipments of 350 francs suggests that its correspondent is Ambroise Vollard, the dealer, gallery and publisher, since this is the monthly advance agreed between the two men.
