GAUGUIN Paul (1848-1903)
Signed autograph letter addressed to Daniel de Monfreid [Tahiti], July 1901. 2 pages large in-8 in ink on graph paper with a WOOD engraving by Paul Gauguin. "[...] I received your letter of May 6 by hang-up from a sailing ship. An excellent letter that promised for the following month and I had everything ready for my departure to the Marquesas. Unfortunately neither from Vollard nor from you any letter. Of course I remain out of order until the next mail. You are wrong to worry about the paintings you sell outside of Vollard - 1o I did not make the contract with him for everything fixing a maximum of 25 paintings. - 2o The paintings you have are made and sent before the contract. They arrived late it is true, but in fact he is not entitled to them. And on this subject, many old paintings known to him at the time are still for sale and I would like him to cover his advances with those because for a year I have not been able to work. Another thing - I have received a letter from Ch. Morice who tells me that he has great hopes of having a group buy my large painting and offer it to Luxembourg. This is very important if it succeeds. So I give him a few names like Fayet and Bibesco; you could support that. If it succeeds, it would make it very easy to sell it within a year and would bring a whole clientele - if you see Meilhorat perhaps he would work for his share of the money. Morice in the names of the members quotes O. Redon. Would he have inherited? For Redon was far from being rich. You should also see Vollard in case he claims to own the painting, which would be completely false [...]". The planned sale to the group of art lovers did not take place; the painting is today one of the most prestigious works in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. George-Daniel de Monfreid, French painter, sculptor and master glassmaker, father of the writer Henry de Monfreid, was Paul Gauguin's friend and confidant. REFERENCE Letter from Paul Gauguin to
