SADE Donatien-Alphonse, marquis de (1740-1814)
Autograph letter addressed [to his businessman Gaspard-François-Xavier GAUFRIDY]. S.l., [June 1775]. 4 pages in-4 in ink on paper (marginal wetnesses, edges crumpled with loss of some letters). "I do not know the fate of St-Louis, Sir, and have not yet heard of him; if you have paid him, I hope that you would not have forgotten to have him defend La Coste, because he stayed there only to take the train [Saint-Louis was a valet of Sade at the castle of La Coste, who defended the maid Nanon when she made a slanderous racket after giving birth to a child without a declared father].... What do you say about all this new train, this mother of the young secretary who did not in any way ask for her child, who by all her letters even recommended her to become attached to me and to serve me well, arrives now without warning to make the devil's chimes in Aix. It is clear that they are working deafly against me, and that they do not want to break out until everything is in order, they want this child moreover to make him declare new impostures, no doubt. This conduct of the Lion King's prosecutor is quite extraordinary; they have put my mother-in-law to sleep, blinded her and are deceiving her. We warn her by this one, and give her decidedly the alarm on these new maneuvers which really seem worrying... M. de Castillon [procurator of Aix-en-Provence] conducted himself in this with a prudence and a desire to serve which deserves our recognition for ever; Ah! Great God, if we had still had the fools of the past time, it would have been an affair to have four horses pulled [drawn]... at least. This magistrate seems to me to be very wise, very honest, and very reasonnable. Finally, Madam has left to put the child into her hands herself, and to bring him back if she can, since we have calculated that it is necessary to remove weapons from these people as much as possible [...]". 9 letters and documents concerning the Marquis de Sade are attached, including 4 from
