SADE Donatien-Alphonse, marquis de (1740-1814)
Autograph letter to his wife in Paris. S.l.n.d. 1 page in-12 in ink on azure paper, address on the back to Madame de Sade. Moving letter written to his wife from prison. "What reason do you have to let me lack everything, when I have never let you lack anything? The things I need most are being taken away from me here, or sent to me, or sent money for me to get them; I have just been assured that I will not be provided with anything that you have not sent money for, so please send some. If you're short of funds, here's a warrant. Also send me a piece of stomach and some cotton stockings that I absolutely cannot do without. I'm sending you a second list as well. Fill in at least the items I can't get here, such as my stomach piece &c and send money for the rest [...]". The second page contains a list of what Sade would like to receive from his wife.
