STAËL NICOLAS DE (1913-1955)
Signed autograph letter addressed to Paul CHADOURNE [Antibes, December 21, 1954]. 2 pages ½ in-4 in ballpoint pen on paper, envelope preserved. "Antibes is an open-air prison with a transparent suplice light. It suits me as much as life itself but I work there tirelessly. The news is not trivial. I have eighteen paintings that will travel all over America from Texas to Baltimore for a year to furnish museums. I've made a trip to Menerbes to receive the reporters of the Illustration surprised by the scale of the project. The museum in Zürich wants fifty paintings by the end of next year. And your loves have passed their exams of I don't know what boarding school or day school, the lover in title takes care of the sister in Paris and the loves in Marseille. I'm still the dangerous man. What's the point? [...]». [Less than three months later, on March 16, 1955, the painter committed suicide in Antibes.] Rare document.
