TOULOUSE-LAUTREC Henri de (1864-1901)
Signed autograph letter addressed to his mother, Countess Adèle-Zoé de Toulouse-Lautrec. Paris], January 25 [1892]. 4 pages in-8 in brown ink on paper on a double page (horizontal fold, small tear and small ink stain). Touching letter in which the artist evokes an exhibition of his Turnips which were favourably noted in the press. In January 1892, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec exhibited two paintings, including a version of Celle qui se peigne, at the Cercle artistique et littéraire in rue Volney. His works, much in demand by art dealers and exhibition organisers, especially since the success of the poster on the Goulue, were also appreciated by art critics. It is to Arsène Alexandre's article, published in Le Paris on 8 January 1892, that this letter refers. "My dear mother, I have just opened the Cercle exhibition where my turnips, although placed as badly as possible, have been favourably noted by the press. I've been very kindly received in the newspapers since my poster was put up. The 'Paris' [...] has gone so far as to devote two columns to me where my person is revealed without omitting any detail [...] Distribute my love to whomever is entitled, your son, Henri". (Letter published in: Correspondance, edition of Herbert Schimmel, 1992, n° 212, p. 187).
