TOULOUSE-LAUTREC Henri de (1864-1901)
Autograph letter signed "Harry" addressed to his mother [Paris, June 1892]. 4 pages in-8 in ink on paper. About his financial situation. "I wanted to write to you only after seeing my Uncle Charles, but he was so broken up that I could only wish him a quick good evening. I saw Louis who showed me your letter. He's plunged into a state of indifference, unfortunately justifiable. Unless he looks like an executioner, he can't act... (even if it means regretting it afterwards?) This very personal reflection is well founded. Let's get back to the matter at hand. Jalabert has 11,000 F at my disposal with a random supplement, which together with the sums already advanced gives me a lot of 20,000 F which will allow me to live a good part of next year. Your lot of 25,000 F is therefore higher than mine. All this is to be noted. We will always get along well, I have no doubt about it. I preferred to leave Jalabert as depositary of the money, not wanting to appear too greedy at first, and then wanting to agree with you to invest it, or to deposit it in a safe place. If you believe, however, that I must realize (perhaps cautiously), write to me specifying what I must do [...]". Correspondence (ed. Herbert Schimmel, 1992), No. 229, p. 194.
