VERLAINE PAUL (1844-1896)
Louise Leclercq [Paris], [1886]. In-12 of 216 pages, with deletions, deletions, additions, sentences or words changed. Navy blue silk bradel with vertical stripes of flowers, entirely untrimmed. Last proofs corrected by the author. The contract for this book was signed on March 4, 1886 and it will be published in November by Léon Vanier, the publisher of the Symbolists. An autograph letter signed "P. V." by the author to the publisher Vanier, August 10, 1886, 1 page in-8 in ink: "I read in Victor Hugo this line: Cette bibliopole auguste et colossale [L'Âne, ca. 289]. Bibliopole is taken here in the sense of city of books. So it would be prudent to delete "Bibliopole Vanier" from the end of the book to avoid screwing us." He complains that Louise Leclercq's printer took it easy with the second corrected proofs: "All mistakes are scrupulously maintained". He will therefore meticulously correct them as well as the first part of [a widower's] Memoirs. "I'll also have some verses to give you, I think". PROVENANCE Julien Le Roy Libraries with ex-libris (cat., 1951) and Colonel Daniel Sickles (cat., VII, 1991, #2914).
