Les Amants de Montmorency, poem, autograph manuscript signed. May 1851. 3 pages in-4, under cover titled "Thème de l'amour impossible et de la mort". This piece of fifty verses corresponds to the central part of the famous poem entitled Les Amants de Montmorency, first published in the Revue des Deux mondes with the subtitle Élévation, dated January 1, 1832. The poem was later reprinted in Poèmes antiques et modernes (1837). The starting point of the story is a news item that occurred on April 29, 1829. A young married man and a young girl committed suicide in an inn room in Montmorency "[...] They had, she said, nothing forgotten. The maid had some trifle which she shows by following their footsteps, step by step. And God? - Such is the century, they didn't think about it [...]".
