BARRÈS Maurice (1862-1923) écrivain
MANUSCRIPT autograph (incomplete), [Adieu à Moréas, 1910]; 5 pages in fol. in violet ink with erasures and corrections, orange percaline binding with title piece on spine (G. Gauché). Tribute to Jean Moréas, pronounced at Père-Lachaise on May 2, 1910. "I bring to Jean Moréas the farewell of the companions of his youth. I knew him more than a quarter of a century ago; we spent several years side by side in the Latin Quarter, and since then, how many times have I come, on beautiful afternoons, to meet him in the Luxembourg Gardens and chat with him about literature, as we have done again, these last few days, peacefully, affectionately, in this room where he awaited death with such calm pride. When I was twenty years old, I heard Moréas chant his first poems, with the same accent with which he was telling me, not long ago, the most beautiful fragments of the Ajax and Philoctet that evil has just interrupted. Thus the life of our friend is clear in my memory"... This manuscript lacks the last third, or so, of the text that appeared a few days later at Émile-Paul's. Various documents are attached, including a moving letter to Karl Boès on the last moments of Moréas, issues of Les Hommes d'aujourd'hui on Moréas by F. Fénéon and on Barrès by Moréas, press clippings and notes by André Schück. PROVENANCE André SCHÜCK (ex-libris).
