BONAPARTE Lucien (1775-1840) frère de Napoléon, artisan du coup d'État du 18 brumaire, il fut ministre de l'Intérieur mais se brouilla avec Napoléon
L.A.S. "L. Buonaparte", Mechelen 15 germinal IV [4 April 1796], to Jean-André MOLTEDO; 2 pages in-4, on his letterhead Armée du Nord... Buonaparte, Commissaire des guerres, vignette (small slits on one edge); in Italian. Beautiful letter on the marriage of Napoleon and Josephine, and the critical situation of France. [Jean-André MOLTEDO (1751-1829) was deputy of Corsica at the Convention; he was then a member of the Coneil des Cinq-Cents (the Five Hundred Hundred Hundred Committee)]. Lucien instructs Moltedo to send a letter to the citizen FRÉRON who must be back in Marseilles, and whose defence he defends: he saved the South, his last mission repaired the wrongs of his youth, and all patriots must support him ("non ho bisogno di dirvi che à salvato il mezzogiorno; la sua ultima missione ripara gli torti della sua gioventù e tutti i Patriotti devono sostenerlo") He also instructed him to send a letter to Josephine de BEAUHARNAIS ("Madame Beaurnais"), whose marriage to her brother is in all the newspapers ("che tutti i giornali annunciano essersi maritata con Napolione") . Then he paints the picture of a bloodless France, on the verge of bankruptcy and undermined by the royalist movements: "Qui si parla molto di pace da una parte e da mandati dall'altra. Tutti i servizi publici mancano e non si sostengono che per mezzi estraordinari: gli mandati sono già discreditati avanti la loro emissione". If peace is not made, there will have to be a new terror, not the one that has set up a thousand guillotines, but a popular movement that will prohibit public enemies, agitators and royalists to raise their foreheads superbly; he reproaches the Council of Five Hundred for having listened to the lies of Isnard or Jordan; conspiracies against freedom must cease: "Credo che se non abbiamo la pace, bisognerà il terrore per salvare la Republica; non il terrore che aveva drizzato mille guillotine, ma il terrore che avéa impresso un tel movime
