GAULLE Charles de (1890-1970) général, Président de la Répub - Lot 881
GAULLE Charles de (1890-1970) général, Président de la République L.A.S. "C. de Gaulle", Paris 12 January 1926, to his "dear comrade" [Lucien NACHIN]; 4 pages in-8, heading Le Maréchal de France Inspecteur général de l'Armée Vice-président du Conseil supérieur de la Guerre. Cabinet. Important letter of reflections on national defence, while in the cabinet of Marshal Pétain. Nachin's observations on the study on the "Role of our places" are all judicious. "We agree, it seems to me, on how to judge Vauban, Gouvion St Cyr and even Séré from Rivers. Each of these men is to be praised for having been able to synthesize the conditions of national defence in their time; all three believed it necessary [...] to set up a defensive system for the territory. But, perhaps we do not see things quite from the same angle, thinking of today's needs; you seem worried about a defensive organization that would link the command plan. Also, in my humble opinion, the defensive organization should not, as many wish, be a function of the plan of operations. Defensive organization, which is necessary at all times, and which depends on the geographical, political and moral conditions in which the country is situated, is a matter for the government. The plan of operations is the business of the command. The commanders include places (whatever their form) in their projects as means, just as they include manpower, equipment and economic power. If I have the good fortune to meet you some day, I will specify, if you will, what we could do today" .
