MATTIOLI Ercole (1640-1703) diplomate italien, ambassadeur du duc de Mantoue et agent double, saisi et emprisonné par les Français, c'est le «Masque de fer»
L.A.S. "Ercole Mattioli", Venice 12 December 1676, at "Madama Reale"; 3 pages in-fol. (small slit); in Italian. Extremely rare letter from the future "Iron Mask" giving news from Venice. Mattioli protests about his devotion to His Royal Highness. The Serenissima of Mantua has rented for four months a palace in Santa Maria Formosa: "With the continuous disorders he makes and the bad health he enjoys, one trembles that it is not to get lost". He evokes the controversies that arose between the House of Austria and the Republic of Venice following the accident of Trieste, the next departure of four ambassadors to Rome. The galley Morosini Gallo, which brought to Zakynthos the horseman VEMEDA, governor of the armies and engineers for the construction of the fortifications, will transport the Provost General PRIULI who will visit all the most important places, to fortify those closest to the Ottomans. There is concern about the indisposition of the first VIZIR and the attitude of the Sultan and the army. With the severe cold, five people were found in two boats dead from the cold, probably hunting birds and caught in the ice. For the office of Provost General of the Sea, the three candidates in contention are Antonio BARBARO (ambassador in Rome), Marco BEMBO (consul in Aleppo) and Pietro VALIER (Provost General of the Islands); Barbaro's successor in Rome could be Trooper ZEN who is in Spain, or Trooper MICHELI (ambassador in Vienna). He announces the opening of the opera season at the Teatro di S. Luca, then at the Teatro Grimani in S. Giovannni e Paolo .
