PROUDHON Pierre Joseph (1809- 1865) écrivain et théoricien p - Lot 961
PROUDHON Pierre Joseph (1809- 1865) écrivain et théoricien politique L.A.S. "P.-J. Proudhon", Paris May 9, 1855, to Citoyen SALIÈRES; 3 pages in8. Very interesting letter against his biography by Eugène de Mirecourt. He gave up answering the defamations of this booklet: "The biography that Sr. de MIRECOURT has just made of me is for the use of the devotees: its purpose is to explain to them, according to Christian principles, this strange, scandalous phenomenon, tending to the ruin of all religious and governmental ideas, of a poor man, revolutionary, anti-Christian, and yet honest man" . According to his sources among the clergy of the Bisontinent, the author defends "that it was the organ that had lost me, [...] that by a miracle from hell, all the depravity of my soul had been concentrated in this unique vice, in order to leave me more freedom and prestige to seduce the unwary faithful [...]. Such is the theme, essentially ecclesiastical, developed and embroidered by Mirecourt [...] in this biography the false and the true are mixed in a strange way, and always in the interest of the thesis". Thus it is false that he married into the Church and had his children baptized; he goes back on his trial, and prefers to ignore the author's accusations about his person, his family: "This is grotesque: no honest man has ever believed himself insulted by Dantan's caricatures". He also passes over the debates that took place between the People and the Mountain and which exposed him to so many false interpretations: "An answer to this Biography would therefore be [...] an attack on the Church and on Christianity itself, even more than a justification. It is a question of whether an enemy of God can be an honest man...". He could not afford such a discussion today, given the influence of the clergy, who currently reigns and governs, and he prefers to resign himself to silence...
