MASCAGNI Pietro (1863-1945)
L.A.S. "P. Mascagni", Cerignola 1 February 1891, to the music editor Giulio RICORDI; 4 pages in-4; in Italian (2 small slots). Long letter of complaints and threats to his publisher. His letter of January 30 surprised him: it was not long ago that he discovered these affair and he sees with sorrow that he is surrounded by infi delinquencies... In Rome, shortly after the second performance of Cavalleria rusticana, everything was done to force him to commit an ungrateful action: all means were employed, telegrams from lawyer Panattoni, another from PUCCINI, who later in Milan told him to ignore it... They wanted to take everything from him, they wanted him to leave for Milan with his Ratcliff who would be accepted to offi ce... Then they refused to throw a piece of bread at him, They threw him out, even though he had already received the first prize in the Sonzogno Competition... On 13 June 1888 he went to Naples, where Puccini was, for Le Villi in honour of the friend and master. Mascagni had Ratcliff's fourth act with him, and promised to bring the score to Ricordi, who could have had it for nothing. Puccini paid him a lot of compliments. Now Ricordi says he has a moral contract with Mascagni, who offers to discuss this in due course. He has a lot of documents, he feels very strong and is not afraid of anything...
