MASSENET Jules (1842-1912)
MANUSCRIT MUSICAL autograph signed " J. Massenet ", Cossack War Song, 1886; 5 pages in-fol. (paginated 1-6 with a page 4/5) tabbed and bound in a navy-blue half-chagrin volume with corners (Ch. Maillet). Melody for song and piano, based on a poem by Hélène VACARESCO: " Virgin, your black hair is above your belt " . In G major, it is marked All° quite animated. Written in black ink on 24-line Lard-Esnault paper, the manuscript presents corrections by scraping as well as erasures; it counts 57 measures, including three crossed out with blue pencil. On the first and last pages, indications tell us about the genesis of this piece: "Étretat. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 86. Continuous rain, cold. Juliet ill"; and "Etretat. Thursday, Sept. 23, 1986. Best weather. Juliette a little better". This Cossack War Song was collected in book IV (No. 10) of the Melodies (Heugel 1896). At the bottom of the first page of the manuscript, Massenet wrote the following: "I offer this manuscript to my friend Paul Émile Chevalier J. Massenet Paris 31 Oct. 92" (Chevalier was the nephew and associate of Henri Heugel). PROVENANCE Archives and memories of the Heugel family (26 May 2011, no. 104).
