PUCCINI Giacomo (1858-1924)
L.A.S. "tuo Giacomo", Viareggio 22 March 1922, to Rose ADER at the Hotel des Palmes in Palermo; 2 pages in-4 to his address, envelope; in Italian. Very beautiful love letter to the singer, evoking Tosca, Mimi and Suor Angelica. He is very alone but always with her because he thinks only of her, his one and only joy in the world. With her life passes more quietly and gives him hope; but without her, everything is dark and gloomy. But why can't he see her, why can't he feel her by his side? He is condemned to half a happiness. Maybe it has to be that way. Maybe it's the fate of each of them. But he asks himself: is there such a thing as true happiness? They say there isn't. If he could have it by his side, he would be so happy! Would he have other thoughts? Age would be his misfortune! But he thinks he would forget his many winters with a spring like the sweet and loving Rose! She is elegant, has such an interesting physiognomy, an angel's voice when she sings, sweet and adorable when she talks and silvery when she laughs. She has a virginal body (die Jungfrau). He remembers the costume of Mimi and the blue dress of the 1st act of Marat [Il piccolo Marat de Mascagni]! He is like Cavaradossi when, before dying, he suffers through the physical memory of Tosca! He would like to cover her with kisses and put his head on her young and fresh chest! How he desires his sweet Rosa and how he loves her ! He adds that the young Valcarenghi, the son of his publisher, has arrived. He is a polite and kind person. Puccini hopes he will be happy with the sweet Suor Angelica... " Solo solo ma sempre con te perché non penso che a te sola, mia sola ed unica gioia che mi resta al mondo. Con te la vita va via più tranquille e anche ho ancora viva la speranza: ma senza di te, tutto il nero, il buio é per me - ma perché non posso io godere di vederti, di sentirti vicino a me? Ho sempre la condanna della mezza felicità - deve forse essere c
