TCHAÏKOVSKI Piotr Ilitch (1840-1893)
L.A.S. "P. Tschaikovsky", Moscow 25 October/6 November 1879, to the conductor Joseph DUPONT; 3 pages in-8 on paper with his Cyrillic initials (infi me accroc in the upper margin); in French.

Important letter on his work and his doubts.
"Dear master and friend! You were extremely kind to have asked me for some composition of mine that could have been played under your direction in Brussels. If up to now I have not sent anything to you, it is because I was indecisive as to which of my works would be the most suitable to present myself to the enlightened public of your capital. I have three simphonies of which the first [called Winter Dreams] is engraved only in score, the second [called Little Russia] only in piano arrangement, and it is only the third [called Polonaise] which will soon be engraved (score and part separated) in a complete manner. It is also the one I consider the best, at least the most mature of the three. Besides that I have a Concert Overture (Romeo and Juliet), a simphonic fantasy (The Tempest), another entitled Francesca da Rimini, overtures and pieces detached from my operas. After mature reflection it is the overture of Romeo and Juliet that I believe of all my things is the one that has the best chance of pleasing foreign audiences. A simphony by a completely unknown author always inspires challenge. The audience says: there are so many famous ones, why do they want to bore us for an hour with the work of an unknown? An overture - that's different. If it was a bad one, you think that after all that lasted only 15 minutes. So it is the overture in question that I recommend to your kind attention. It is engraved at Bote and Bock in Berlin ... He would be prepared to supply other scores if Dupont so desires... "As for the third simphony, as soon as it's ready, I'll send it to you. "...
