TCHAÏKOVSKI Piotr Ilitch (1840-1893)
L.A.S. "P. Tchaikovsky," Kline 21 September [3 October] 1888, to Eduard NÁPRAVNIK; 4 pages in-8 with his medallion cipher (in Russian). Important letter with musical quotation concerning his opera Eugene Onegin. Eduard Frantsevitch NÁPRAVNIK (1839-1916), of Czech origin, was for many years the principal conductor of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, as well as of concerts of the Russian Musical Society, and a close friend of Tchaikovsky, whose works he created. Eugene Onegin, which had its premiere on March 29, 1879 at the Maly Theatre, will be given in Prague on December 6, 1888 under Tchaikovsky's direction; it will be the first performance of the opera outside Russia]. " In Prague they behaved a little strangely. But why didn't they ask me this summer to send them the costumes and reductions [for piano]? I thought about this several times, but I myself had scruples about talking about it first, because I thought that the performance of Onegin was postponed or completely abandoned, because since February I hadn't heard anything from Prague. About the costumes, I will write to Pogojev and ask him to send the drawings. That's all I'll be able to do. As for the score, I have a great request to make to you. For God's sake, my dear friend, have the cuts in the first part of the third act, which I made during the performance of the opera in St. Petersburg, copied at my expense. In fact, I am talking about the modulation I had made to avoid this long and boring chorus: [musical quotation] and go directly to the entrance of Tatyana. As for the Scottish [music added to Act III for a revival of 1885 at the Mariinsky], I don't really want it, but if you think it's better for the opera, please give it to be copied as well, and, my dear Eduard Frantsovitch, please ask Volodya to send everything. He will pay for the copying work. As soon as you'll let me know that everything is done, I'll try to pay for the copies. Excuse me, excuse
