BEETHOVEN Ludwig van (1770-1827). L.A.S.... - Lot 1093 - Ader
BEETHOVEN Ludwig van (1770-1827). L.A.S. "Ludwig van Beethowen", [Vienna] 11 June 1811, to Count Ferdinand PÁLFFY VON ERDÖD; 4 pages in-4 (slight browning and traces of assembly); in German. About his opera project on The Ruins of Babylon. Count Ferdinand PÁLFFY von Erdöd (1774-1840) was administrator of the Burgtheater and one of the directors of the Imperial Opera. The Ruins of Babylon, or Giafar and Zaïda, PIXERÉCOURT's "historical melodrama", was premiered at the Théâtre de la Gaîté on October 30, 1810, with music by Gérardin-Lacour ] Beethoven learned that the actor Leopold SCHOLZ soon wanted to perform for his benefit at the Theater auf der Wieden the melodrama The Ruins of Babylon, which Beethoven wanted to compose as an opera, as he had informed the Count. He understands nothing of this plot. This melodrama performed on the Wieden stage will be sold out at most five or six times. The music is bad, it's worthless. But as an opera, it is a music that will remain and will certainly be without comparison more advantageous for the Opera Theatre, especially from a commercial point of view. It is very difficult to find a good opera libretto; for the past year, Beethoven has refused no less than twelve or more. He has had to pay out of his own pocket without receiving anything usable. And it is now, on the occasion of an actor's benefit, that he should get some, and for him and for the Count's theatre a curse should result? Beethoven hopes that, after careful consideration, the Count will forbid the actor to perform this melodrama, since Beethoven told him of his intention to compose it in opera. He was so happy to have found this subject that he even spoke about it even to the Archduke and also to other intellectuals, and everyone found the idea excellent
