BEETHOVEN Ludwig van (1770-1827). L.A. (the end is missing), Mödling 15 October 1819, to Archduke RODOLPHE; 4 pages in-4 (the last page with signature and date is missing; crumpled paper, small crease cracks in the folds, slight soiling on the last page); in German. Important letter to Archduke Rudolph, Beethoven's pupil and patron, about the concerns of the guardianship of his nephew Karl, and about a musical composition of the Archduke. [Karl van Beethoven (1806-1858), the only son of Kaspar, Ludwig's brother, was entrusted, on Kaspar's death in 1815, to the guardianship of his uncle, who refused to share custody with the mother; hence Beethoven's stormy relationship with his sister-in-law, and a series of lawsuits that would deeply affect him, and which are discussed here. ]Because of the grape harvest it was impossible for Beethoven to find a car at Mödling; he was promised one for the next day. It is thus only the next day that he will have the honor (and the pleasure) of placing himself at the disposal of His Imperial Highness. He will be at H.I.H. punctually at half past three in the afternoon, knowing that this is the hour that H.I.H. prefers. He refers to the written statement concerning the removal of his nephew from Vienna, which the Archduke was kind enough to give to Archduke Ludwig. He urges H.I.A. to have this document returned to him, because it is urgently needed because of the annexes. He would really be in a most unfortunate situation if he could not have these documents. A new attack has been unleashed against him by this venal Magistrate of Vienna, who is acting in collaboration with his nephew's mother; as a result, while feeling almost too exhausted to take any further steps in the interest of his nephew under such undignified auspices, Beethoven must nevertheless, for his honour, apply to the Court of Appeal.
