DELIBES Leo (1836-1891). MANUSCRIT MUSICAL with autograph corrections and annotations, Sylvia (1876); 170 pages in-fol. (1st page slightly soiled; ink stamp of the Heugel Archives). Orchestral score of the suite from the famous ballet Sylvia, abundantly corrected and annotated by Léo Delibes. Six years after the success of his ballet Coppélia, Léo Delibes had a new ballet in 3 acts and 5 tableaux, Sylvia, or the Nymph of Diana, performed at the Paris Opera on June 14, 1876. The argument had been written by Baron Jacques de Reinach and Jules Barbier; Louis Mérante choreographed it, and the title role was played by Rita Sangalli, in a set by Jules Chéret. Delibes made an orchestral suite from it , published in 1880 .Sylvia, nymph of Diana, is dedicated to chastity. The young shepherd Aminta has fallen in love with her; she pushes him away and challenges Eros, the god of Love. She inadvertently wounds Aminta with her arrow, and is in turn struck in the heart by an arrow thrown by Eros. As she comes to soften on Aminta's body, Sylvia is taken by the black hunter Orion. Aminta, brought back to life by a sorcerer, goes in search of her beauty. Prisoner of Orion, Sylvia manages to intoxicate him and escape. During a party in honor of Bacchus, Aminta, desperate of her vain search, is attracted by a veiled captive, in which he recognizes Sylvia. Then Orion arrives, furious, who wants to kill Sylvia with his axe; but he is pierced with an arrow by Diana, who also wants to punish her nymph, guilty of loving a mortal. But Love intervenes, reminding the goddess of her love with Endymion <
