HAHN Reynaldo (1874-1947). L.A.S. "Reynaldo... - Lot 1133 - Ader
HAHN Reynaldo (1874-1947). L.A.S. "Reynaldo Hahn", Saint-Germain-en-Laye Samedi [August 3, 1895, to his friend Pierre LAVALLÉE]; 4 pages in-8 with the heading "Mon Logis". Rare testimony on his stay with Marcel Proust in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, during which Proust reflects on his collection Les Plaisirs et les jours and his novel Jean Santeuil. A close friend of Proust between 1893 and 1900, Pierre Lavallée had met the writer at the Lycée Condorcet and became friends with him a little later when they were studying law together. He notably received Proust with Reynaldo Hahn on April 5 and 6, 1895 in his castle of Segrez (Essonne). They moved away from each other after Pierre Lavallée's marriage in 1900. As for Reynaldo Hahn, he composed a symphonic piece, Illustration pour le Jardin de Bérénice, and a Trio for violin, cello and piano, which he completed in October 1895 at Beg-Meil with Marcel Proust ] He thanked Lavallée for his invitation to Segrez ... "I am in St Germain - an illusory but charming resort - I love nothing as much as this country; and Marcel ends up making it dear to me by coming here every day. He didn't want to settle down at the hotel because of the bed ! But the pure air of the vast terrace and the intimacy of the forest did him a lot of good, I think. I work little and badly - I fall asleep little by little in a fatal idleness. However, I am thinking of a trio - don't laugh - that will amuse me in writing - precisely because of my lack of experience in chamber music. The Garden of Berenice is moving slowly - I've been looking for 10 days now for the small, slender trees that used to surround Berenice's house - I can only find baobabs or palm trees! I am looking forward to the good hours we can spend together in your beautiful estate: silent walks, daydreaming, discreet singing and good warm talks, that's how I imagine life in Segrez - that's how it should be. Marcel must write to you tomorrow or the day
