INDY Vincent d' (1851-1931). MUSICAL MANUSCRIPT... - Lot 1139 - Ader
INDY Vincent d' (1851-1931). MUSICAL MANUSCRIPT autograph signed "Vincent d'Indy", Le Mystère de Saint Christophe, 1908-1913; a 40-page notebook in-8 of text, and 9 notebooks in-fol. (36 x 27 cm) including 9 titles, a list of characters and 93 pages of music; all in pencil. Complete first draft manuscript of the libretto and part of the libretto of his opera The Legend of Saint Christopher. Sacred drama in 3 acts and 8 tableaux, La Légende de Saint Christophe is Vincent d'Indy's most ambitious work for lyric theatre. The fruit of a long ripening process, his third opera (op. 67) was finally composed between 1908 and 1913, mainly during the rest of the summer truces, but its orchestration was not completed until the autumn of 1915. Although Vincent d'Indy played excerpts at the piano for his friends as early as 1912, he only gradually brought the work to the public, publishing La Queste de Dieu, a "descriptive symphony taken from La Légende de Saint-Christophe" in 1917 with Rouart, Lerolle et Cie, while the full score was published in 1918 with the same publisher. The opera was finally premiered on June 9, 1920 at the Palais Garnier, with sets by Maurice Denis. The Legend of Saint Christopher is built on the model of the medieval "mystery" (this is the title appearing on the manuscript of the libretto and the score) in a series of paintings with recitation, and on an argument borrowed from the Golden Legend of Jacques de Voragine, transposed in the Cévennes.
