MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY Felix (1809-1847). L.A.S.... - Lot 1163 - Ader
MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY Felix (1809-1847). L.A.S. "F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy", Leipzig 27 February 1838, to Adolphe STEINBERGER, of the Committee for the NiederRheinische Musikfest (Lower Rhineland Music Festival) in Cöln (Cologne); 3 pages in-4, address on the spine (marginal tears by breaking the seal without touching the text, slit at one fold). Beautiful and long unpublished letter evoking the organization of the famous Lower Rhineland Music Festival that Mendelssohn had directed since 1833, and evoking the composition of the program of the next Music Festival, and the choice made by the Josua Committee (of HÄNDEL). But he deeply regrets that both symphonies have been abandoned, and allows himself to insist. With MOZART's Symphony in D major without a minuet, which lasts barely half an hour, or one of HAYDN's, which are all no longer, the Festival would be given one more ornament, and Mendelssohn would be sorry to have to give that up. Josua won't last more than 2 great hours; and since it has no Overture, it seems better to him also for this reason to start the first day as the second with a symphony, and for this reason to choose one of these two, or one of Ferdinand RIES's .
