In March 1929, Francis Poulenc wrote for the piano the Pièce brève sur le nom d'Albert Roussel [FP 50] for the musical supplement (entitled Hommage à Albert Roussel) of the special issue of La Revue Musicale of April 1929 devoted to the composer Albert ROUSSEL (1869-1937); Maurice Delage, Arthur Honegger, Alexandre Tansman, Jacques Ibert, Conrad Beck, Arthur Hoérée and Darius Milhaud also collaborated in this homage; all these pieces were played during a concert at the Salle Gaveau in the presence of Albert Roussel on April 18, 1929. In 1949, probably at the request of Arthur Hoérée (whose name appears at the top of the title page), for a concert celebrating the eightieth anniversary of Roussel's birth, Francis Poulenc produced a version for small orchestra: small flute, flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, trumpet, timpani, harp, and strings.
