SCHUBERT Franz (1797-1828). MANUSCRIT MUSICAL... - Lot 1200 - Ader
SCHUBERT Franz (1797-1828).
MANUSCRIT MUSICAL autograph, fragment of the Variationen uber ein französisches Lied, [1818] 2 oblong pages in fol. on the front and back of one page (24,2 x 30,5 cm), under folder and cardboard boxwith title.
Fragment of the last variation of this piece for piano four handsdedicated to Beethoven.
The manuscript is written in brown ink on 12-line paper, with 3 systems of 4 staves per page. It presents 31 bars (bars 9 to 39 of the 8th
variation).
The eight Variations on a French Song (op.10, D.624), composed in July 1818, were published in 1822 by Cappi and Diabelli, with a dedication to Beethoven, for whom Schubert had immense
admiration.
This leaf is related to the 8th and last variation [Più mosso, Tempo di Marcia], with some erasures and corrections, and presents some differences with the printed version (in the 4th and 10th bars of our leaf at the first piano, and 25th and 26th at the second
piano). It
bears in the margin a pencil note by Gustav NOTTEBOHM (1817-1882, pianist and musicologist, author of a thematic catalogue of Schubert's works): "Autograph von Frz.Schubert Gehört zu einer Vorarbeit zu den 4händigen Variationen Op.10 letzte Variation) (G.Nottebohm
)".
The autograph manuscript, sold in Paris in 1935, has since been dismembered; leaves can be found in the Sibley Library in Rochester, the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris and in St. Petersburg.
