WIDOR Charles-Marie (1844-1937). MUSICAL... - Lot 1221 - Ader
WIDOR Charles-Marie (1844-1937). MUSICAL MANUSCRIPT autograph signed "Widor", Master Ambros, Orchestral Suite op.56, [1886]; 103 pages in-fol. (the first and last pages a little soiled and yellowed). Orchestral score of the suite from the opera Maître Ambros. Maître Ambros, lyric drama in 4 acts and 5 tableaux, on a libretto by François Coppée and Auguste Dorchain, was premiered at the Opéra-Comique on May 6, 1886, with Caroline Salla (Nella) and Charles Bouvet (Ambros) in the main roles, under the musical direction of Jules Danbé, with sets by Jean-Baptiste Lavastre and Eugène Carpezat, inspired by the paintings of the Dutch school. The action takes place in 1650 in Amsterdam: Master Ambros, a former privateer, succeeds in thwarting a plot and defending Amsterdam that William II of Orange wanted to invade; at the same time he conquers the heart of the beautiful Nella. The work had only six performances, and Widor made an Orchestral Suite from it, taking up the most picturesque pages, and played at the concerts. The manuscript is in black ink on 22-line Lard-Esnault paper; it contains erasures, corrections and collages. It is divided as follows : Ouverture, marked Allegro ma non troppo (p. 1-49); II. Intermezzo, marked Moderato (p. 51-68
