BÉRAUD Antony
Fritz and Pauline. Comic opera, lyrics by M. Béraud, music by M. Treillard, followed by a song by Ossian, about the death of Oseau his son and a romance. Special school, imperial, military, 1811. Manuscript in-4, long-grained red morocco, framed border, in the centre crowned imperial eagle encroaching a lightning, smooth ornate spine, inside roulette wheel, lining and blue moire guards, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Manuscript of 140 pages, decorated with 3 original pen washes signed by Béraud and dated 1811. The first, placed in frontispiece, represents two winged gods approaching the altar of friendship; the second, also allegorical, shows a group of children playing music and dancing at the foot of the statue of Apollo. At the end of the volume, 7 folding music plates. Bound with the imperial coat of arms, probably those of the Imperial Military School. After a stay in Versailles, on their return Napoleon and Josephine stopped at the military school of Saint-Cyr on 23 July 1811 to attend the performance of this small comic opera that the pupils had organised for them. Antony BÉRAUD (1792-1860) entered the military school of Saint-Cyr in 1809 and took part in the last Napoleonic campaigns. He then went into literature and collaborated in numerous magazines. A prolific author, his plays were performed in the greatest Parisian theatres. Provenance: Baron Charles d'Huart (ex-libris). An L.A.S. by Frédéric MASSON, a specialist in Napoleonic studies (1 oblong page in-12) is attached about this manuscript, asking its owner to lend it to him for a moment so that he can study it and use it for his work.
