Classical natural history dictionary. Book edited by Bory de Saint-Vincent. Paris, Rey et Gravier, Baudouin frères, 1822-1831. 17 volumes in-8, half leather from Russia, red paper plates, crowned figure in the center, smooth spine decorated, untrimmed (Binding at the time). Original edition of this natural history monument. 159 engraved plates, 150 of which were coloured at the time, plus a folding map for the Primitive Distribution of Mankind on the Surface of the Earth. These plates cover all the kingdoms of Nature: plants, shells, butterflies, batrachians, fish, mammals, etc. Their interest is both scientific and aesthetic. The scholars who participated in the writing of the book are among the best of their time: Jussieu, de Candolle, Geoffroy de Saint-Hilaire, Delafosse, Lucas, etc. The mastermind of this publication, Jean-Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent (1778-1846), was not only a distinguished scholar, close to Lacépède, but also a valiant soldier present at Austerlitz, who later served in the staff of Ney and then Soult. Elected deputy during the Hundred Days, he was condemned to five years of exile by the Second Restoration. A copy of the figure of Marie-Louise, Duchess of Parma, former Empress of the French. Important freckles, a few brown leaves. Restorations to a few headdresses, minor rubbing at the binding.
