BURGSDORF Friedrich August Ludwig von
New forestry manual, for use by forestry officers of all grades [...]. Translated [...] and adapted to our system of organization, according to the Order of the Government, by J. J. Baudrillart. Paris, ArthusBertrand, 1808. 2 volumes in-8, red morocco, frame decorated with various casters, coat of arms in the centre, smooth decorated spine, blue moire lining and guards, gilt edges (Tessier). Scientific and technical manual of the imperial administration, translated and adapted by Jacques-Joseph Baudrillart (1774-1832) from a reference book written by Friedrich August Ludwig von Burgsdorf (1747- 1802), a German forestry specialist famous throughout Europe. The book was intended to unify and codify the work of forest rangers, which under the Ancien Régime was more a matter of hereditary or purchasable duties than of functions with real skills. The first volume contains a précis on the forest code, a general section on natural history, and descriptions of several hundred plant species found in forests and woods. In the second volume, illustrated with 29 engraved plates, there are chapters containing introductions to geometry, mechanics and construction, both civil and naval. Wood is considered both from the point of view of the preservation of the natural heritage and from that of its uses in the services of civil society and the armies of the Empire. 5 folding tables complete the illustration. Jacques-Joseph Baudrillart, agronomist and forester, retained his functions under the Restoration and published The Forestry Code (1827) then The Fishing Code (1829). Very fresh binding signed by Tessier, with its label at 45 rue Delaharpe in Paris gilded on a moire guard. Coat of arms subsequently minted.
