CONSERVATEUR Le
The Conservative. Paris, Au Bureau du Conservateur, Le Normant fils, 1818-1820. 78 numbers in 6 volumes in-8, cherry half-marocco with small corners, red paper plates, crowned monogram, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and castors, untrimmed (Binding at the time). Complete collection of the most important political journal of the period. The first issue was published in October 1818, with an emphasis on The King, the Charter and Honest People. It opened with a letter from the editor, Le Normant fils, in Chateaubriand, asking him to take part in the undertaking and even to draw up a plan for it. CHATEAUBRIAND will become the soul of the magazine, will define its principles and thus deliver copious articles for each issue: The Curator will support religion, the King, freedom, the Charter, honest people or neither me nor my friends can be interested in it, he declared. During the whole time of its publication, Chateaubriand will devote himself entirely to it, giving free rein, according to his biographer Ghislain de Diesbach, to his anger, his irony, his curious gift as a visionary, bringing to his articles as much care as to his speeches and revealing himself, from the very first issues, a dazzling polemist. He also surrounded himself with collaborators such as Félicité Lamennais and Louis de Bonald. Of a high intellectual level, the newspaper never stooped to personal polemics, and during the two years of its existence, it was one of the most influential in France, dictating the opinion of the royalist party. It was read in all the courts of Europe. Precious copy in the figure of Marie-Louise, Duchess of Parma, former Empress of the French. Freckles. Discoloured plates from the last volume. Provenance: small modern ex-libris (crowned N).
