DU ROZOIR Charles
Praise of Pius VI, with the Religious History of Europe during his pontificate, accompanied by official documents and authentic documents. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1825. In-8, red Russian half leather with corners, crowned figure in the center, smooth spine decorated (contemporary binding). Original edition, decorated with a lithographed portrait of Pius VI. History of Pope Pius VI (1775-1799), martyr of the French Revolution, the Directory and the Consulate. After witnessing, helplessly, the entry of Berthier's troops into Rome in February 1798 and the proclamation of the Roman Republic, the sovereign pontiff was forced to renounce his temporal power and leave the Eternal City. After taking refuge in Tuscany, he was captured by the French army and deported to the prison of Valencia where, after an interminable journey, he died of exhaustion. An enlightening work on the confrontation that the French Republic and then Napoleon delivered, beyond the person of Pius VI, to the Papacy. A copy from the library of Marie-Louise in Parma, linked to the figure of the former Empress of the French. Some freckles. Back a little blackened. Provenance: Calvin Bullock (ex-libris).
