[FORTIÈRE]
Pizarre, melodrama in three acts, prose. Paris, Barba, An XI - 1803. In-8, long grain red morocco, border decorated with stylized palmettes, smooth decorated spine, inside lace, roulette on the cups, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Original edition of this historical melodrama inspired by the life of Francisco Pizarro, famous Spanish conquistador. In his dedicatory epistle to Napoleon, the author states that he took the First Consul as a model for "the Peruvian monarch", one of the characters in his play. Precious dedication copy, bearing this autograph consignment from the author on one of the cover sheets: to General Bonaparte on behalf of the author. Fortière. There is no trace of this Fortière, nor other writings by him. A note placed on the back of the title page states that this play is totally different from the one performed at the Porte Saint-Martin theatre. This annotation refers to Pizarre, or the Conquest of Peru, a historical melodrama, in three acts, in prose and grand spectacle composed by René-Charles Guilbert de Pixerécourt (1773- 1844), performed on 27 September 1802. Restorations to the headdresses and corners. Provenance: King Louis-Philippe's library at the Royal Palace (wet stamp on the title); Doctor Maurice Catinat (ex-libris).
