HÜE François
Last Years of the reign and life of Louis XVI. Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1816. In-8, long grain red morocco, floral roulette in frame, coat of arms in the center of the plates, smooth back decorated with a semé of small fleurs-de-lis, inside lace, blue moiré silk lining and endpapers, gilded edges, modern case (Bradel). Second edition, decorated with the portrait of Louis XVI engraved by N. Schiavenetti, after François Hüe. A faithful servant of the French monarchy, François Hüe (1757-1819) was appointed bailiff of the king's chamber in 1787, then first valet to the Dauphin. Louis XVI had become attached to him and recommended him in his will to his successor and to the whole of France. After the king's death, he accompanied his daughter, the Duchess of Angoulême, into exile. During the Restoration, he was appointed general treasurer of the house of the king and made baron. Fading away behind the high-ranking figures whose actions he recounts, he recounts in particular the attack on the Tuileries during which the Swiss guards were massacred. Superb copy of the memoirs of Louis XVI's valet de chambre, bearing the arms of the Duchess of Berry. It bears the ex-libris of the Château de Rosny and appears in the sale catalogue (1837, no. 1789). A signed autograph letter from the Duchess of Berry to Mme de Quingo, dated Venice, August 1, 1847, is attached. 2 pages in-8 on a double sheet of vellum headed paper from the ducal palace. Exiled in Venice, the Duchess of Berry regrets not being able to help her friend more. She delivers a moving picture of her Venetian life: Here I had the happiness to see all my children together. The Countess de Chambord is an angel that God has given us to console us. Let us pray to the B
