HUGO Victor
The Return of the Emperor. Paris, Delloye, 1840. In-8, red long-grain demimaroquin with corners, ornate back, gilt head, untrimmed, cover (Amand). Original edition of this piece in verse composed on the occasion of the Return of the Ashes. Copy of Prosper Blanchemain (1816-1879), with his handwritten ex-libris. A literary critic and bibliophile, he was librarian for the Ministry of the Interior. A poet in his own time, he fervently admired Ronsard, whose works he published and contributed to his rediscovery. This ode to the glory of Napoleon must have greatly pleased Blanchemain, since he himself, inspired by the repatriation of the late Emperor, composed a poem the same year entitled Le Cercueil de Napoléon, which ends with these lines: Napoleon is not one of those heroes who die / Entirely under a monument; / The future can do nothing against his destiny; / From century to century he walks, and from year to year / He grows eternally!! Fine binding by Amand, known to have been one of Baudelaire's favourite bookbinders. Minimal friction in the binding.
