LUCET Jean-Jacques et ECKARD Jean
Poetic tributes to their Imperial and Royal Majesties, on the birth of H.M. the King of Rome. Paris, Imprimerie de Prudhomme fils, 1811. 2 volumes in-4, red morocco, large framed roulette wheel, coat of arms in the center, smooth spine decorated, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Original edition, decorated with 2 frontispieces engraved on copper by Blanchard: the first of them represents Napoleon on his imperial chariot emerging from a cloud, and the second, of mythological inspiration, illustrates the birth of the King of Rome. Collection of occasional pieces composed in honour of the birth of the Eaglet, published by Lucet and Eckard who had organised a competition open to poets of all nationalities on the occasion. Of the 1263 pieces they received, only 275 were chosen and collected in this work. A copy of the present with the arms of Louis de Fontanes (1757-1821) Count of the Empire and grandmaster of the University since 1808. The poet Louis de Fontanes was appointed grandmaster of the University in place of Fourcroy [...] who died of grief. The scholar had been dismissed because of his revolutionary past. Fontanes may have seen in this position a lucrative retirement, more surely a means of securing his future by looking after the interests of the Church threatened with losing control of teaching. He brought ultra-Montanean Catholics such as Bonald and Father Emery to the University Council and appointed many clergymen, principals, censors and professors. Thus he betrayed, to the benefit of neo-Catholicism, the intentions of the Emperor (Jean Tulard, Napoleon ou le mythe du sauveur, 1987, pp. 317-318). The engravings of this copy are in print before the letter. Slight restoration in the upper part of the first plate of the first volume.
