PARNY Évariste
Various works. Paris Debray, 1802. 2 volumes in-12, red morocco, border decorated with a roulette wheel, crowned figure, smooth decorated spine, green title and tomaison pieces, inner roulette wheel, green silk lining and endpapers, gilt edges (Binding at the time). Edition decorated with a portrait of the author engraved in intaglio by Gaucher on the frontispiece. Évariste Désiré de Forges, Viscount de Parny (1753-1814), born on the Island of Bourbon (now Reunion Island), came to France at the age of nine, where he tried his hand at a career as a clergyman before taking up arms. It was following a return to his native land that he discovered his poetic dispositions. He was elected to the French Academy in 1802. His poetry was very popular at the end of the 18th century. A disappointment in love inspired him to write Erotic Poems, which were a great success as soon as they were published in 1778. A charming copy in morocco with the crowned figure by Joséphine de Beauharnais (1763-1814). It bears the stamp of the Library of La Malmaison, a house bought in 1799 by Josephine from Jacques-Jean Le Couteulx du Molay, a wealthy banker of the Ancien Régime. A few small freckles. Provenance: Doctor Maurice Catinat (ex-libris).
