SAINT-CHAMANS Vicomte Auguste de
Review of the 1817 Session. Paris, Le Normant, 1818. In-8, red half-maroquin with small corners, crowned figure in the center, smooth spine decorated, untrimmed (contemporary binding). Original edition of this account of parliamentary life in France after the fall of Napoleon. Unlike his two brothers Alfred and Joseph, Auguste de Saint-Chamans (1777-1860) never rallied to the ideas of the Revolution, nor to those of the Empire. Arrested briefly in 1794, he lived discreetly until the return of the Bourbons in 1814 and published after the Hundred Days, in 1815, his first work Examination of the faults of the last government (that of Louis XVI), an apology of the monarchist regime. He then began a political career as a deputy in the Marne department, and published several novels and chronicles, as well as political and legal works such as Du système d'impôt fondé sur les principes de l'économie politique (1826). His political zeal earned him the distinctions of Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur and Maître des requêtes at the Conseil d'État, a dignity duly mentioned on the title page of this book. This Session of 1817 is the detailed and commented account of the debates that took place in the Chamber of Deputies and Departments instituted by the Charter of 1814, particularly concerning a law on freedom of the press. The work was cruelly criticized in La Minerve by Benjamin Constant. A copy with all margins, many pages of which have not been cut, in a half-binding with the figure of Marie-Louise, Duchess of Parma, former Empress of the French.
