SISMONDI Jean-Charles-Léonard Sismonde de
Review of the French Constitution. Paris, Treuttel and Würtz, 1815. 4 single-volume works in-8, fawn half-volume with corners, smooth spine decorated, red morocco title piece, speckled edges (contemporary binding). Original edition of this defence of the liberal constitution of the Hundred Days. The Additional Act to the Constitutions of the Empire, in the drafting of which Benjamin Constant took part, met with a formidable outcry. "In the midst of this concert of insults, the eminent voice of Sismondi, an old friend of Benjamin's, stands out, courageously praising the text. (...) Coming from the Cenacle of Coppet, he hated Napoleon as the usurper of Brumaire and the dictator of Europe for a long time (...). But the spectacle of Paris in 1814 revolted him: disgusted by the palinodies of the Senate, he was indignant at a Restoration imposed by the European counter-revolution and these Bourbons, fugitive princes and beggars who alone in Europe never drew the sword for their own cause. Appalled by the policy pursued, he took the Emperor's side as soon as the Flight of the Eagle was announced. (...) Hating the ultras, Sismondi finds vibrant accents to invite in his work to union around the returnee facing reactionary Europe" (Villepin, Les Cent-Jours, 297-299). It is linked with : - PRADT of.
