VILLEROY Nicolas de Neufville, baron de
State Submissions. Amsterdam, at the expense of the company, 1725. 7 volumes in-12, blond calf, gilt roulette and fillet framed, spine decorated, red morocco and green morocco tomaison title piece, tail number, yellow edges (contemporary binding). Nicolas de Neufville, IVth baron de Villeroy (1542-1617), author of these memoirs, was one of the greatest servants of the kingdom of France under the Ancien Régime. His career is remarkable for its duration, the prestige of the posts he held and its exceptional context, since it was mainly during the League Wars, known as the Wars of Religion. He became Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs under Henri III. Apart from a brief interruption at the beginning of the reign of Henri IV, he kept this post until 1616, under Louis XIII, who made him a marquis. His memoirs, which cover the period from 1567 to 1604, were first published in 1622, and continued until 1620 by Tanneguy du Mesnil Basire. A copy with the number PB (Pagerie-Bonaparte) by Josephine and Napoleon at La Malmaison. It bears the stamp of the Bibliothèque de la Malmaison on the title pages. Binding attributable to Bizouard. Restored caps and bits, one restored hinge in volume II.
