BERTRAND Henri (1773-1844) general, Grand-Marechal du Palais, fidele compagnon de Napoleon a Elbe et Sainte-Helene.
LL.A.S. "Bertrand", Longwood 16 May 1821, to his brother Louis BERTRAND, in Châteauroux; 1 page in-4, address with red wax stamp and postmark England. Moving letter after Napoleon's death. "My brother, we have returned the last duties to the Emperor. We leave for Europe on the 23rd of this month on the Camel, transport of the Royal Navy. I hope you will be able to come and give me news of my mother and ours, and I beg you to come and find me where I shall be, either in England or in the Netherlands. On receipt of my letter I urge you to take the necessary steps to obtain passports.... I think that this cannot be difficult; we will arrive, I presume, in the first half of July...".
