ESTRÉES César d' (1628-1714) cardinal et diplomate. - Lot 672
ESTRÉES César d' (1628-1714) cardinal et diplomate. 2 L.A.S. "Le Cardinal Destrees", [1699]-1701; 2 pages and a quarter and 3 pages petit in-4 (engraved portrait attached). Beautiful letters, the second one on the election of the new Pope Clement XI. [1699, to Pierre-Daniel HUET]. "Jaÿ sceu Monsieur that you have given your evesche into the hands of H.M. and that he has given you the Abbaÿe de Fontenay. I offer you with all my heart what depends on my little credit for the graces which you will ask for in Rome. The matter is not pleasant in this country, I remember well that in your promotion at the Bishop's school of Avranche your merit and your fame in Italy as in the other countries attracted you a good treatment, and I did it with pleasure "... Venice 27th January 1701, to Abbot BOSSUET. The abbot answered very well on "the preference which a Pope as wise as Clem 11 will always give to the friendship of the King [...] he will not let himself commit himself to giving pleasure if he can to the one who consecrated him. What you have been told about his figure in the conclave is true. I am afraid that his friends have said that he had conducted this election, all this is chimerical [...] four hours before the news of the death of the King of Spain one does not only believe that it is practicable, that it was done precisely [...] never has there been less machinery in an election" ... He thinks that the Pope will not change anything to "what was done to Mr. de Cambray [FÉNELON]".
